Description

The course is made up of the following two units and you are required to pass both within a five-year period to gain the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety:

NG1 – Management of health and safety with question paper. This is examined by a formal 2 hour written exam
NG2 – Risk Assessment practical assessment

How does it work?

The qualification is made up of Learning Outcomes (LOs) and Assessment Criteria (ACs)

NG1:

  1. LO 1: Why you should manage workplace health and safety
  2. LO 2: How health and safety management systems work and what they look like
  3. LO3: Managing risk – understanding people and processes
  4. LO4: Health and safety monitoring and measuring

NG2:

  1. LO5: Physical and psychological health
  2. LO6: Musculoskeletal health
  3. LO7: Chemical and biological agents
  4. LO8: General workplace issues
  5. LO9: Work equipment
  6. LO10: Fire
  7. LO11: Electricity

You must pass the one written paper for NG1, plus the practical assessment NG2. The marks given for the NG1 written exam paper are:

Distinction: 75 marks or higher
Credit: 65-74 marks
Pass: 45-64

The practical assessment is normally carried out at your workplace following completion of the course and will receive either a pass or referwhich is marked by NEBOSH. This qualification is accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), as well as the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

Who is this course for?

The NEBOSH National General Certificate helps managers, supervisors and other members of staff to manage risks effectively by giving them a broad understanding of health and safety issues. Many people use the qualification as a stepping stone to a career in health and safety. At present 87% of UK employers request a NEBOSH qualification when recruiting for health and safety roles.

Requirements

There are no prerequisites to attend this course. However, it is advantageous that candidates wishing to obtain the NEBOSH General Certificate have a general understanding of Managing Safely prior to attending the course, but it is not essential.

Validity of Award

This qualification does not expire.

Career path

With experience, you could move into a safety management role.

You could also become a consultant and specialise in a particular area like environmental. construction or food safety. With further study you could move into research, training or lecturing.
